The new Garmin gadget uses the missing smartwatch function

Better known for its GPS smartwatches and navigators, Garmin is breaking new ground in health monitoring with its first smart blood pressure monitor: Index BPM.

The first thing you’ll notice is that BPM index (opens in a new tab) is much bigger than, say, a smartwatch. The likely reason for its size is that the device can fit around your biceps and provide accurate readings. Although they are smartwatches that can measure blood pressure (opens in a new tab)those that do so using a cuff are not widely available, and those that use pulse transit time “require regular calibration with a conventional home blood pressure monitor,” says Garmin. Furthermore, Garmin notes, these devices typically cannot “track systolic and diastolic blood pressure,” while the BPM Index can.
